Why You Should Be Careful Using ChatGPT to Plan Your Google Shopping Campaigns

ChatGPT is genuinely useful for a lot of ecommerce tasks. Google Shopping strategy is not one I’d trust it with on its own, and here’s why.
It doesn’t know your margins. To ChatGPT, a sale is a sale. It can’t see that one product gives you 60% gross and another gives you 8% after the supplier’s had their cut. So when it recommends scaling spend on your “best performing” products by ROAS, it has no idea whether those products actually make you money once costs are in.

It doesn’t know which products you’re trying to push or quietly retire. Maybe you’ve got dead stock you want gone, or a new range you’re protecting margin on. ChatGPT treats every SKU the same, because it can only see what you paste into the chat.

It doesn’t understand your account history either. Real Google Ads accounts are full of decisions made for reasons that aren’t obvious from the outside. Campaigns split a certain way, products excluded on purpose, bidding strategies chosen after months of testing. ChatGPT sees none of that. It starts from zero and assumes a clean slate.

Here’s where it bites. Someone asks ChatGPT about a Shopping campaign that’s limited by budget but has a strong ROAS. The obvious answer, the one it gives confidently, is to increase the budget. Spend more, make more. Sounds right.

Except the products in that campaign are all in a sale, there’s a 10% discount code active on top, and free delivery is switched on. By the time you factor all that in, there’s no margin left. The “strong ROAS” was a vanity number. Spending more wouldn’t have scaled profit, it would have scaled losses faster.
That’s the danger. The advice looks correct. It’s well written, logically structured, and completely wrong for your business, because it’s missing the context that lives in your head and your spreadsheets.

Use it for ideas, for first drafts, for understanding the basics. Just don’t let it make spending decisions without someone who knows your actual numbers checking the logic first.
