Writing product descriptions with AI is fine. Copy-pasting them straight into Shopify without reading them is where stores get into trouble.
Start with the obvious tells. Paste a description from ChatGPT and you’ll often find em dashes scattered through it, the kind nobody types by hand, plus stray HTML tags and formatting that breaks your theme’s layout. Customers notice. A description riddled with odd punctuation and broken spacing makes a store look careless, and careless is the last thing you want a buyer thinking when they’re deciding whether to trust you with their card details.
The bigger problem is sameness. Thousands of store owners are using more or less the same prompts. “Write a product description for a navy linen shirt” produces near-identical copy across hundreds of sites, because the model leans on the same phrasing every time. So your description ends up reading like your competitor’s, sometimes word for word in places. You’re not standing out, you’re blending in with everyone who took the same shortcut.
Google sees this too. Duplicate content and thin, generic copy are exactly what its systems are built to filter out. If your descriptions match content already indexed elsewhere, you give Google no reason to rank yours. Worse, mass-produced AI copy with nothing specific to your business does nothing for E-E-A-T, the experience, expertise, authority and trust signals Google increasingly weighs. A description that could have been written by anyone, about anything, signals exactly that.
None of this means avoid AI. It means use it properly. Build a prompt that carries your actual business context: your brand voice, the specific materials and fit, the customer you’re selling to, the questions people genuinely ask before buying this product. Feed it your sizing quirks, your returns policy, the detail a real customer cares about. The output then sounds like you, not like the default voice of a language model.
Then read it. Edit it. Add the bit only you would know. AI gets you 80% of the way; the last 20% is what makes it yours and what makes it rank.
